From Costa Rica, comes this very catchy Death Metal band. Insepulto is their name and I have to say that The Necrodex has been on my player for long!
Who are you and what do you do in your band?
Hello. I am A.P. I am the main composer, guitar player and drum programmer for INSEPULTO.
When/where was your band formed?
The first installment of the band was formed back in 1993. Then the band was put to sleep and it was resurrected in 2007.
Why did you choose to play Death Metal?
We decided to play Death metal because it is the genre that we like the most. We grew up listening to it back in the late 80’s and early 90’s. And we have been die hard fans ever since. So our band is basically a way to pay homage to the bands we like, enjoy and worship since those days.
How do you compose your music? Does only one guy do everything or does everyone contribute?
Well, I come up with all the riffs and ideas for the songs, music wise. Then we all listen to the music and decide if things need to be re-arranged, modified or discarded as a whole. Right after that the Master Butcher (vocals) and U. Xerxes H. (bass) will start writing lyrics and incorporating them into the songs. We repeat the process mentioned above until we are satisfied with the outcome.
Tell us about your lyrics, writing, inspiration etc.
The lyrics are done entirely by both the Master Butcher and U. Xerxes H. Although they keep in the boundaries of the musical genre, their take on lyrics go anywhere from ancient civilizations and horror/gore stories to Satanic related themes in practice as much as in ritual. This variation of topics keeps our songs varied and diverse.
Music wise, I find my inspiration on the bands that I like the most such as Bolt Thrower, Napalm Death, Blood, Thergothon, Azagthoth, Carcass, Cathedral etc.
Tell us about your latest release – The Necrodex full-length. And what next for Insepulto?
Our second album was released by Spanish label Memento Mori. Hails to Raul for giving us the chance to work with him! It has been incredible so far.
The reviews from ”The Necrodex” have been pretty solid and we are, again, very surprised with the response we’ve had.
Our first album was kinda straight to the point. More primitive and raw. For our second album, we wanted to keep that same attitude but adding a darker atmosphere.
We developed more obscure concepts and themes, both, music wise and lyric wise. And I do think the finished product turned out accordingly.
How do you see the state of Death Metal music these days in your country and in general?
Costa Rica’s scene has not developed as it should. Maybe in recent years it has grown a bit, but not too much, though. Just a few bands are serious about their work. Support is small to none (public and local media). But I hope that if we keep working on building a strong foundation, eventually it will be a solid scene.
As for the Death Metal scene in general, there are lots of cool people, indie labels, blogs (such as yours) and review sites supporting the genre.
Although the scene as it is feels saturated, I think there are lots of old and new bands putting great stuff out there!
What are your long term plans as a band? What do you want to achieve?
Well, our sole long term plan is to keep releasing our music. Back in the day, we never ever dreamed about releasing an album. Now we have two! So, we intend to keep doing this until we can no more.
We started the band under one statement: pay homage to the bands we worship and grew up listening to. And that hasn’t changed. If some people out there happens to like it too, then great!
We don’t strive for recognition or underground ”trve” status.
We are currently working in some new songs and I hope we can have them ready in the next few months. Keep in touch if you want more info!
Name an other Death Metal band from your country that everyone should hear.
I think every respected Death Metal fan must listen to CORPSE GARDEN. Their second album, ”Entheogen”, is simply brilliant. The concept of this album fits their music perfectly. It’s amazing as it is brutal!
We would like to thank you for your interest in the band, the interview and your support, Ile! Only Death is real!
