HM-2 is strong in this one. Ashcloud brings you death, the Swedish way.
Who are you and what do you do in your band?
I, Jonny Pettersson play Guitar, Bass and Vocals. Ashcloud also consists of Gareth Nash on guitar and vocals.
When/where was your band formed?
I started the band under the banner of Skinbag in 2005 in Sundsvall/Sweden. But after a move to England, Gareth joined the band, and we are now a UK based band. However, we will always have our roots in Sweden.
Why did you choose to play Death Metal?
Simple, it’s the best genre in the world! Just look at the spectrum of variety you get. You can go from melodic to brutal to technical to straight forward to…well you get the point.
How do you compose your music? Does only one guy do everything or does everyone contribute?
I write majority of the music, but Gareth comes up with some our best riffs, he also writes all the solos.
Tell us about your lyrics, writing, inspiration etc.
On the first album the lyrics was a fictional story of a post apocalyptic world, and is loosely based on the tension between the big powers in the world. The lyrics on ”Children…” is based on the dark mindset of man. Horrendous and ominous thoughts that we all have but most of us don’t act on. It is exploring the part of ourselves that most people don’t want to acknowledge.
Tell us about your new full-length Children Of The Chainsaw.
We have taken everything that is Ashcloud and pushed it a step further. We have put our all into this album.
How do you see the state of Death Metal music these days in your country and in general?
Death metal is as strong as ever. There is so many high quality bands from all over the world at the moment. Not only Swedish bands like Ribspreader, Blood Mortized, Puteraeon, Demonical, Feral, Vanhelgd. You also get bands like Bodyfarm, Lifeless from Netherlands, Dead Congregation from Greece, Infected Chaos from Austria, Revel in Flesh, Slaughterday from Germany, Valgrind from Italy, from England Vallenfyre, Winds of Genocide and Temple of Baal from France, along with old school bands that has been going strong since the 80s and early 90s. The list goes on and on!
What are your long term plans as a band? What do you want to achieve?
Keep writing and recording high quality death metal. Possibly do a few live shows if the right offer reaches us.
Name an other Death Metal band from your country that everyone should hear.
It’s hard to just pick one, but Feral is a band that every death metal lover should hear. I am extremely excited for the new Ribspreader and Blood Mortized albums as well!
Thanks for a good interview, and keep supporting the underground scene!
