Church Of Disgust

I came across Church Of Disgust few months back and their brutal and chaotic sound immediately made an impact on me. Here, you have an interview with a man that is very passionate about his music and Death Metal in general!

Who are you and what do you do in your band?

My name is Dustin James, I am the vocalist and rhythm guitarist of Church of Disgust.

When/where was your band formed?

The band was initially conceived in 2010 in the wastes of north Texas, by myself and friend Tim. We would frequently get stoned and jam music of the bands we love, and eventually started writing our own. Fate later found us in San Marcos, Texas where I met Joshua, who replaced Tim and became the other half of Church of Disgust for a few years. Now the band is split between Texas and Florida with the current lineup of Joshua Bokemeyer-lead guitar, Dwane Allen-drums, Travis Andrews-bass and myself on guitar and vocals.

Why did you choose to play Death Metal?

It’s the music we love! Why not play the sickest, heaviest shit imaginable? Growing up, like many, I kept seeking out music that was heavier and more extreme, until finally I landed on death metal-thanks to bands like Morbid Angel and Cannibal Corpse…..and now at age 32 I’m still obsessed with it! Play what you’re passionate about, not what’s fucking trendy.

How do you compose your music? Does only one guy do everything or does everyone contribute?

It’s much more of a collaborative effort now than in the past. Josh and I usually bring our riffs to Dwane and Travis, then everyone helps to build upon it, help with transitions, or just say that it flat out sucks! I am very pleased with this process, I feel that it has made us write some of our best material to date, and our upcoming album will be proof of that!

Tell us about your lyrics, writing, inspiration etc.

I’m an avid reader, so I draw most of my lyrical inspiration from books. H.P. Lovecraft is obviously a big one, but an even bigger inspiration is the morbid writings of Brian Keene, my favorite current horror author. Fans of the genre not familiar with his work should do so immediately! (Recommended reading: Darkness at the Edge of Town, The Conqueror Worms, Dark Hollow for starters)

Other inspiration includes classick horror films, whiskey-fueled descents into filth and even dreams…..anything sick and monstrous.

You have had steady release pace so far. Can we expect something in near future?

Absolutely…currently we are writing for our second full-length, VENERATION OF FILTH, and will soon be releasing a split with German death fiends CRYPTIC BROOD. Expect more details on the album to come soon, it’s going to be a monster, our best and most disgusting release yet.

How do you see the state of Death Metal music these days in your country and in general?

I honestly feel that this is a great time for death metal… many great bands putting out really killer shit(Cruciamentum, Desecresy, Funebrarum, Dead Congregation, Galvanizer, Solothus, etc) without sounding like uninspired retro copycat bands, although there are plenty of those too!

What are your long term plans as a band? What do you want to achieve?

For now, we just plan on continuing to write and perform ROTTING DEATH METAL! We aren’t looking to re-invent the genre, but we will continue forging a sound that is uniquely ours. We have no desire to be an ”old-school throwback” or ”worshipping” a specific band or sound, we just play no-frills raw death metal. Of course, at times we do wear our influences on our sleeves, but that’s just the starting point. We don’t aspire for fame, glory or money, obviously, we just play the music we love. Playing overseas would be great! (promoters, please get in touch)

Name an other Death Metal band from your country that everyone should hear.

I couldn’t possibly name only one band from the USA, there are too many sick fucking bands everyone should be listening to! CIANIDE(one of the greatest death metal bands ever), Blaspherian, Torture Rack, Imprecation, Steel Bearing Hand, Ghoulgotha, Morgengrau, Koroidia, Hod, Ectovoid, Nekro Drunkz, Skulls, Amputator, Oath of Cruelty, Lord of Depression, Last Sacrament, Disevered and more I’m missing, surely.

Free word.

Thanks to Stench From the Grave for the interview, and all the sick fucks reading and supporting death metal! Fuck off to ”” and all the other bullshit gossip sites like it!
