Who are you and what do you do in your band?
My name is Raf. I am one of the guitar players in the band and I write most of the riff that we turn into songs all together.
When/where was your band formed?
Torturerama was formed in 2008 by the drummer Christophe and me. We all come from Limburg, a provence in the north-east of Belgium.
Stefan, our singer (and now also bassplayer) joined us pretty soon after that. We’ve had some line up changes but we’re pretty steady all in all. Dave, our other guitar player has been with us for 4 years already so time flies!
Why did you choose to play Death Metal?
What else is there to play? 😉
No, Christophe came from a very brutal and technical band and I came from a Thrash band. He was totally sick of the over technical stuff and asked me if I wanted to start a new band together with him. Apart from the fact that he’s an obnoxious asshole 😉 , we became good friends. We just wanted to play some of the groovy stuff like they did in the early nineties, but then just our own filthy version of that.
How do you compose your music? Does only one guy do everything or does everyone contribute?
We all contribute, but most off the riffs are my doing. We work on the songs all together for the most morbid result.
Tell us about your lyrics, writing, inspiration etc.
Our inspiration comes from horror movies, old books and of course our own morbid imagination. Even sometimes stuff that actually happened.
We kinda have a horror thing going on in our music and lyrics.
We tend to stay away from political content, not that we don’t care, we just have no intention to bring politics into our music. In the end, all politicians are populist faggots without a backbone. So why waste time and energy on them.
By the way, there are enough other bands who do have political messages and they do that well enough for us not to have to dig into that shitpile.
Tell us about your latest release – Close Encounters Of The Morbid Kind
We recorded it almost one year ago after Daniël from GODEATER RECORDS contacted us. We had a shitload of songs ready to record.
We did the whole recording process ourselves. That gives us full control and above all, it’s cheaper than going to a high end studio. We are, like all extreme metal bands, on a budget. And also, we kinda like the DIY spirit so this is just how we like to record. We did our previous release(It Begins At Birth) ourselves as well. We learn new stuff all the time.
For the mixing and mastering we once again relied on our good friend Fredde from Dirty Bird (Also Massive Assault/Sledge Hammer Nosejob)
And yet again he did a very good job. We are very pleased with the end result. Both Sound and songwise!
How do you see the state of Death Metal music these days in your country and in general?
In general it is what it always was. An extreme style of music that lurks from the underground. I hope that never changes. For both in my region and the whole world. It’s good fun to play shows in underground venues with cheap beer and other great bands. It doesn’t have to change at all in my opinion.
What are your long term plans as a band? What do you want to achieve?
We will be happy to play some cool shows. And we will see what happens. After all, it’s death metal, even if we turn into the next hot band we will still have to show up at work on mondays. Like so many other bands…
Name an other Death Metal band from your country that everyone should hear.
Well, there are a couple worth mentioning. Disinterred and Carnation are 2 very cool death metal bands and they both have an old school vibe going on. I personally enjoy them both very much.
Words have no power to impress the mind without the exquisite horror of their reality.
