Who are you and what do you do in your band?
I am Kostas, the founder of ABYSSUS. I am the vocalist, but I also played the bass in the band for the first 4 years. I write all the lyrics, and up to our latest album release I used to compose most of the songs too.
When/where was your band formed?
The band formed back in 2011 by me as a one-man band with guests and session musicians in Athens, Greece.
Why did you choose to play Death Metal?
It didn’t happen on purpose; I usually listen to classic heavy metal, Thrash, Doom, but the old-school death metal is the music I am truly keen on!
How do you compose your music? Does only one guy do everything or does everyone contribute?
Both of us (me and Panos, the guitarist) write our own stuff; we then get in touch and through several changes we make a baseline of each song to work on. We don’t always agree, but I suppose we have been doing a good job so far.
Tell us about your lyrics, writing, inspiration etc.
The lyrics is my work, but there is not a central theme in them. In Abyssus I write for war (as a watcher of the pain and terror it causes), for social oppression, for the end of the world but also for historical events or personalities. So in this album “Enthrone the Insane” was inspired by the Roman emperor Nero (37-68 A.C.) “Across the Fields of Death” was inspired by the Charge of the Light Brigade during the Battle of Balaclava (Crimean War) between France and Great Britain against Russia (October 25th, 1854) and “Visions of Eternal Pain” was inspired by the paranoid bombing of Piraeus from the allies (January 11th, 1944)
Is there an ideology behind your band?
No, not really, we just want to serve the metal spirit, unleash music we love to hear and be passionate for that.
How do you see the state of Death Metal music these days in your country and in general?
There is a very active death metal scene in Greece these days, with some great bands involved, but not so much old-school death metal. I believe that there is a lot of bands in the worldwide underground scene, that we should at least spend some time on. There are diamonds to be found and be unleashed.
What are your long term plans as a band? What do you want to achieve?
We are thinking of small steps each time. First we were thinking of an album with very good songs, almost excellent production and sounding close to the great albums of early 90s. We did it. Now we are thinking of some live shows and for an album, in the next year more killing than ”into the abyss”. We believe we can do it!
Name an other Death Metal band from your country that everyone should hear.
Not just one. The Psalm are a killing act! Head cleaner, Necrorgasm, Blessed by Perversion, Alter self, Death courier, Soulskinner, Resurgency and many more. The Greek death metal scene is fascinating, believe me.
If you like old-school death don’t hesitate to listen to ”into the abyss”, you will be surprised. Support the underground music, buy stuff , go to lives and show interest to your local scenes.
